A project of St
Andrew's Cathedral, in response to the suffering of young children
orphaned or displaced by the sectarian and communal conflicts in
Indonesia,
to provide a refuge in their time of trouble.
“How oft in the conflict, when pressed by the foe,
I have fled to my Refuge and breathed out my woe;
How often, when trials like sea billows roll,
Have I hidden in Thee, O Thou Rock of my soul.”
- W.Cushing, “Hiding in Thee”

HFI helps
children in crisis
In
2001, HFI joined hands with the Indonesia Missionary
Fellowship (IMF) and this partnership has been committed to
helping children who have been orphaned and affected by the
religious conflicts in Maluku and Sulawesi. With continued
bloodshed in these islands, there are more than 22,000
children today who are orphaned and traumatized by the violent
massacre of their families. Many of these children witnessed
the gruesome and senseless killings of their parents and loved
ones, and they are left without homes, without education and
often, without hope. The HFI-IMF partnership worked at
offering such children from the troubled cities of Ambon and
Poso a safe and Christian home in the HFI orphanage/child care
centre located in East Java.
The
work in 2001 began with 18 children and today, this help is
extended to about 100 children who live at the Centre. At this
Centre, the children continue with their education in the
nearby public schools and those who are emotionally affected
by their traumatic past continue to receive special care and
counselling. |
