The Greco-Roman Background of NT Letters
8/1 – 5/2 (5 Tues 7:30pm @ PHA-B)
Rev Timothy Chong
Like all letters, the New Testament Letters were written to a specific group of
people living in a specific era. For us to understand the letters we need to
first comprehend the culture, ethos & worldviews of the people to whom the
letters were written.
The course looks at the historical, socio-political and religious environment of
the Early Church and the primary forces at work in the 1st Century. Topics
include the influence of Greek culture, social norms and network, what is deemed
honourable or shameful, the place of the family unit, etc. It also looks at the
pervasiveness and features of slavery, education, entertainment and other
religions in the Greco-Roman world.
