Synopsis:
(The talk was held on 2 Nov 2010.)
‘Do you want a hundredfold return on your money? Give and let God multiply it
back to you … Invest heavily in God; the returns are a staggering 100 to 1 …
Every man who invests in the Gospel has a right to expect the staggering return
of one hundredfold’.
These words encapsulate the heart of the so-called prosperity gospel. They are
penned by Kenneth Copeland, an early pioneer and one of the most influential
promoters of prosperity teaching.
In this talk, we examine the movement that have captured the imaginations and
shaped the faith of hundreds of thousands of evangelical Christians in America
and beyond. We investigate the origins of this movement, and delineate some of
its cardinal doctrines. We then provide a critique of the movement on the basis
of the teachings of Scripture and the traditions of the Church. The talk will
discuss the following topics:
- What is the Word-Faith Movement? Who are its most influential leaders?
- What is the Prosperity Gospel?
- What are some of the tenets of this movement, and why is it so influential?
- How should Christians respond to prosperity doctrines from the standpoint of
the
Bible and the teachings of the Church?
