Project
Khmer H.O.P.E. A
St Andrew's
Cathedral, Singapore project with the aim of
alleviating poverty and creating sustainable livelihoods for
Cambodians with social, economic and health disabilities
For the staff and students of
PKH Centre (Anglican), Singapore conjures up a picture of tall
skyscrapers, clean city, numerous hotels, IT-connected,
English-speaking and friendly individuals – often curious, and
much more. Depending on which visitor from Singapore to the PKH
Centre they spoke to …..
Three staff and three former PKH students had the opportunity to
visit Singapore in February 2009, and also attend a Sunday morning
service at St Andrew’s Cathedral as well as meet with the many
supporters behind Project Khmer H.O.P.E. all these years. Catch a
glimpse of their testimonies in this video clip:

The skills development training
team this year comprises -
Susan Goh (Hospitality
Trainer)
Mabel Tan (English Teacher)
Loh Tze Khoong (English
Teacher)
Kang Beng Gek (English
Teacher)
Yin Samnang (IT Trainer)
Heng Ngoun Y (IT Trainer)
Jeffrey Chua (IT Trainer)
For the new year, PKH will
continue to train 120 youths in English, Housekeeping and
Hospitality Services, with a new requirement that all trainees
will stay at the PKH Hostel, as it had been been observed that
the residential aspect of the training has added value to
improving the skills of the youths and shaping their
characters.
PKH will also extend PKH’s English Course to very poor youths
in Aoral. 2 classes (25 students each) of daily tuition in
English will be conducted at the PKH Mission House. We hope to
teach these youths to read, write and speak English so that
they will be eligible for vocational training and jobs in the
cities and town centres.
We will continue to be actively involved in the Seeds of Hope
programme (a joint effort with Full Gospel Assembly Cambodia)
to support 40 children of the 120 children (6 – 18 years old) at the Childcare
Centre.
We will also continue to provide basic healthcare to the poor
in Aoral as well as to the children, youth and staff at the
PKH Centre. Consultations, medicines and health education will
be given free of charge
We are grateful
for the blessings in 2008
Vocational Skills Development for Poor Youths During the year 2008, a total of 103 youths (18 -23 years
old) successfully completed their training in English,
Housekeeping and Hospitality Services. By the end of the year,
all of the Housekeeping and Hospitality graduates had been
placed out (in jobs or training attachments) in hotels in
Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.
All the graduates from the previous batches - 2006 and 2007,
also found jobs within a year of graduation.
Catch the trainees in action during their attachment and
recent graduates at their jobs, in this video clip:
Childcare for orphans, street kids and poor village
children Through the Seeds of Hope programme, PKH supported 40
children at the ChildCare Centre as well as a number of
18-year olds who have since left the ChildCare Centre to
pursue university education in Phnom Penh.
Healthcare for those who cannot afford it The PKH Mission House in Aoral (construction completed at
the end of 2007) made it possible for the doctor and
healthcare team to spend extended periods each week in this
district. They treated an average of 370 villagers each month.
Most of the people in Aoral are very poor. Barter for the
basic necessities of life is still practised in the villages.
The healthcare team also continued its work of looking after
the healthcare needs of 250 children, youth and staff of the
PKH Centre.
We are thankful for the many teams who visited PKH Centre and
assisted in one way or another, including:
Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore
Wellspring Anglican Church, Tasmania
All Saints Anglican Church, Singapore
St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Singapore
