Easter Play 2006:
A Garden Called Gethsemane
by Denise Chan
April 2006
A grand total of 4
months from beginning to finish.
LYnC’s first Easter Play production has been a very faith-stretching
and exciting experience. There were lots of toil, sweat, fun…and
tears. Through it all, we have experienced God’s faithfulness and
that His plans are way above ours, His plans are always perfect.
The whole Easter Play experience had been a roller coaster ride. One
of the most difficult moment for us was a time when we didn't have
much practice. The rehearsal turned out to be very traumatic and left
many hearts drained.
However, we praise God for Pastor Joyce, who encouraged us by sharing
how the Lord spoke to her through the following psalm, and how we
should respond as we journeyed towards the final lap of the Easter
Play.
Psalm 20
For the director of music. A psalm of David.
1 May the LORD answer you when you are in distress;
may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.
2 May he send you help from the sanctuary
and grant you support from Zion.
3 May he remember all your sacrifices
and accept your burnt offerings.
4 May he give you the desire of your heart
and make all your plans succeed.
5 We will shout for joy when you are victorious
and will lift up our banners in the name of our God.
May the LORD grant all your requests.
6 Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed;
he answers him from his holy heaven
with the saving power of his right hand.
7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.
8 They are brought to their knees and fall,
but we rise up and stand firm.
9 O LORD, save the king!
Answer us when we call!
The following is a list of some of the testimonies of how the Lord
provided for the play that led us to the final evening. That very
night,
we praised God for the good turnout of about 700 people, for the
people who came to Christ, for the many who rededicated
their lives to Jesus, and for the seeds that were planted in the
hearts of the people.
1. Drummer. No drummer. One of the helpers, Bertrand, started
to play randomly on the piano during makeup time. MK said, "This
will sound good with a drummer". Alvin said, "I brought my sticks."
Viola, and we had a drummer for the finale! We were amazed at how
Alvin had his drum sticks on a Good Friday, when he was not
due to do anything with them. Second, the production team had no
idea that he was a drummer! Such perfect timing from the Lord.
2. Projection. It was horrid on a particular Saturday’s
practice. However, at the final run the next day, the laptop worked
perfectly without having the need to adjust the settings! More
amazingly, the laptop decided to malfunction just 10 minutes before
Pastor Timothy Chow was due to give a message after the play. There
was no way to communicate to him to delay the commencement of
playing the worship songs as the projection needed time to restart.
However, he somehow decided to extend his sermon and when he
finally gave the signal for the musicians to play the song, the
projection flashed on the screen that very second!
3. Lights. The control board was supposed to be faulty for
some reason or another during the final run. It auto-shuts off every
5 min. But, according to our Youth Director, Matthew, the lights
were working well during the 2nd run!
4. 2nd Run. Despite the fact that the cast ran all the way
back to CNS from a quick meal, they pulled off the 2nd run
successfully even though they were breathless from the extremely
short lunch break.
5. Lights & Makeup. Out of the blue, a couple came to CNS
and said that they were here from the Young Adults to help with the
Easter Play. The amazing part was that they are part of an external drama
production company outside church, and one of them specialized in lighting!
Obviously, the other lady was able to help with makeup! This couple
who joined us for lights and makeup were very surprised how God led
them to the play. In the first place, they only joined YA recently,
and they didn't know that the play was lacking in lighting and
makeup artistes.
6. Walkie-talkies. We needed about 5 walkie-talkies. Tim Wong
was tasked to arrange for the walkie-talkies at the last minute. He
started to quote us prices like $50 a set, and later, $5 a set...and
by the end of the evening, he said we've got 8 walkie-talkies free!
I have no idea about the details, but it is definitely not a coincidence.
7. Cloths. We needed white cloth and some black ones for the
play last minute. We were about to send someone out to buy them, but
it turned out that Uncle Hali's office had them! Viola, among his
cupboard of stuff and boxes were an abundance of white cloths! How the Lord provided!
8. Faulty mikes. On the night of the performance, we were a
little unnerved with the problem of a microphone that was not
switched on in the beginning scene. God did not solve this problem
in a whisker. Instead, He seemed to have created a much more
impactful testimony when many of the audience commented that they
realized that the youths remained composed (the word they used was
professional!) and how they continued to stay in character. For
everyone in the cast, we had learnt that it was not about how good the
technical aspects were, but it was about God, and how He wanted to
touch lives.
Indeed, the Lord had taught us how imperfect and weak we were, yet He
was able to use us for His glory and be a part of fulfilling the
Great Commission.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who
love Him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28
