Singapore’s
first Anglican church
is
a microcosm
of the
nation of Singapore.
Spanning 3 centuries, St
Andrew’s Church was built on an 8-acre site reserved by Sir
Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore in the 19th
Century. The north and south transepts were added in the
20th Century; with them the aerial view of the church is the
shape of a cross. A new extension was constructed
in the 21st Century; a contemporary approach in design was
adopted where the new is in respect of the gothic
architecture of the Cathedral.
The
Welcome Centre of
St Andrew’s Cathedral faces North Bridge
Road and it is located at the confluence of the city’s
underground Mass Rapid Transit lines and adjoins the City
Hall Station exit. It serves as a reception point for all
visitors to the church.
Tourists and busy commuters to Singapore’s financial and
business district are welcome to this national monument, its
beautiful courtyard and garden.
