WELCOME NOTES

Being a young adult is a most challenging and exciting phase of life; it also happens to us only once in our lifetime! During this phase of life, our long term goals and destiny in life are often shaped and conceived. It is therefore important that Christian young adults should (collectively) submit themselves to the love and discipline of our Father God at this point of their lives.

I encourage all young adults in the cathedral to join the YA Ministry, and allow God to shape and build your lives together, to the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ. You will be blessed.

Shalom,
Pastor Kuan Kim Seng

Young adulthood is filled with many pursuits that take up our time and attention, namely education and studies, work issues and career, relationships and life partner, lifestyles and finance issues, etc. Much wisdom is needed in handling our life as a young adult well. Much guidance is required in charting our spiritual purpose and direction in life. At the Cathedral YA ministry, we seek to build up young adults in spiritual maturity to be strongly anchored to the rock faithfully committed to Christ, spiritually rooted in God’s Word and regularly challenged to live our lives differently and significantly as salt and light in the world.

Together with other young adults in friendship and community, we welcome you to join us in this journey as we seek to fulfill and live out God’s purposes in our lives. Come join us and allow God to work in us. Life will never be the same again.

In Christ,
Pastor John Lin

INTRODUCTION

Who we are:
We are young adults aged between 21 to 30 who desire to fulfill the Great Commission in our lives (Matthew 28:18-20). We believe in living life with passion, purity and purpose, and running this spiritual race together.

Brief history:

The YA ministry is a Cathedral-wide fellowship of young adults (YA). It first started in 2003 under the purview of the 9.30am English service. Conceptualized and led by Ds June tan, a core group of lay leaders was mobilized to initiate and start the YA ministry. The first YA meeting was held on 15 September 2003. One significant event in 2004 was the running of Alpha course which drew in many YA. We encourage YA from across the various congregations of the Cathedral, to meet and grow spiritually together.

YA Vision:
To develop a personal, lifelong and obedient relationship with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

YA Mission:
Discipling young adults who will serve God's purpose everywhere.

WHAT WE DO

With a diversity of needs of differing transitional needs of young adults, there is increasing emphasis on the need to be missional with focus. The core uniformity in today’s world is around a common set of values, commitments, culture and philosophy. Hence, the central ministry focus is “Develop, Empower, Release.” Every young adult who joins the community of YAM will be developed and empowered, and released to serve the Lord in whichever niche they are in.

The purpose of change is for continuity, in terms of fruitfulness and having fruit that last. (1) It allows for alignment around ministry philosophy rather than methods; (2) Empowers Good People; (3)  Provides Maximum Accountability; (4) Allows to address members who are inconsistent with our values and culture and (5) Help to  recruit and train people whose convictions are consistent with the YAM.

There was a reformation of grouping to allow the emergence of life groups, where life transformation through deep and safe sharing and accountability is the core essence. It is a place where Growing Faith Where Life Happens.” Christian faith begins with the life of God. It's a lifestyle-a spontaneous journey with the Lord Jesus and His disciples in close-knit community. We are very thankful to the Lord for meeting with the life group facilitators in deliberate getaway silent retreats, where many returned with renewed sense of awe and passion for Jesus. The three ingredients we hope to see in life groups are: (1) Focus on people (rather than programs); (2) Focus on mission (vs. institutional maintenance) and (3) A Vision to transform the world.

We have nothing to boost, but all to give thanks to our merciful and gracious God. We give thanks for the past, cherish the present and eagerly anticipate the future with Him.
